What is pneumatic actuation?

What is Pneumatic actuation? Let’s find out in this article about Pneumatic actuation!

A definition of a Pneumatic actuation is “an energy converter typically in the form of compressed air into mechanical motion”. The motion can be rotary or linear, depending on the type of actuator. They are usually used for automation control to decrease or reduce human interaction with system’s internal mechanism. What is the benefit of this you say? Automatic modulation and emergency shut down. It works as prototypical actuators that is used as an external compressive force in a form of air or gas to move a piston inside the hollow cylinder by building pressure. This will create linear force that is related to the pressure to move along the straight line that is called the linear pressure. What makes rotary Pneumatic actuation differ from a linear one is the torque is generated opposed to a linear motion. It is normally done through transferring the linear motion of a piston to a rotating one. Industrial pneumatic system utilize pressure of 80 to 10 pounds per square inch usually.

Types of Pneumatic actuations

There are 3 basic types of pneumatic actuators:

  • Spring or Diagram actuation

This type of actuator needs compressed air to push through a diaphragm against a plate which is normally against a plate opposed by a spring. Spring will retract the diaphragm when the pressure is reduced. Then position will be achieved through varying the pressure. When air pressure is lost, this type of actuator can fail to open or closed with the spring returning the actuator to the resting position.

  • Piston actuation

This type of actuator utilizes a piston inside a cylinder. The piston movement is usually caused by applying force on the one side of it. Using a spring on the side, it modulate pressure to the other side. The piston can be identified with the diameter of the cylinder and length of stroke. The larger cylinders can exert more force.

  • Rotary Vane actuation

This actuators works similar to piston style having two pressurized chambers. The only difference is it has a pie wedge shaped housing instead of a cylinder.
