Choke Control Valves

Choke Control Valves: What is “choked” in a control valve and what causes it?

Choke Control Valves mean the choking of the flow in a valve where decreasing downstream pressure would not increase the flow of the control valve. For a choked control valve to happen, its pressure ratio will be at 1.8 methane and gas velocity at Mach 1, 767.2 MH. When upstream pressure of the choke control valve is too low whereas the downstream pressure is higher, there will be no choked flow. Choked control valve happens when there is high pressure drop through the valve. If that is the case, chocked control valve can happen at any time.

How do I know that I have choke control valves?

  • Sound
  • Cavitation
  • Pitting
  • Low on Flow Rate

One thing you would know when you’re experiencing choke control valve is when the valve makes or increases its noise. This is because the sonic velocity at Mach 1 is flowing through the valve.

Cavitation

In liquid, cavitation can happen. It’s when the liquid makes the valve to be overpressure which can cause extreme loud noise and vibration that can cause damages at the valve.

Pitting

If there is pitting happening to you valve trim, chocked flow can be an issue.

Low on Flow Rate

If your control valve is not producing the needed amount of flow rate, it is probably because you are experiencing choked flow and that your valve might not be a proper size that is eligible for this kind of flow conditions.

But for your information a choke control valve is also a useful thing to have. It is designed to restrict flows of air in carburettor of an engine or a valve. This will enrich your valve fuel – air mixture and improves the ability to start your engine in low temperature conditions.
